So, if the dealer buys 399 vehicles from the factory, they’ll be responsible for selling those 399 vehicles.
It’s similar to the hamburger and buns McDonalds sells to its franchisee. If the burger doesn’t get sold, the franchisee is still responsible for paying.

Dealers take out loans to pay for all the vehicles they buy from the factory.
Even though unsold cars are the dealer’s problem, the auto makers don’t just walk away and leave the dealers ‘holding-the-bag’. They help dealers by advertising and offering customers incentives and special financing.2
